To gain maximum exposure for the programs that the Extension Services offers its' client base, an Open House is held each June. Master Gardeners and other Extension Service professionials are on-hand to explain the service's programs and to offer assistance. Master Gardener's also conduct guided tours of the gardens and answer horticulture questions.
Last year, over 2,900 visitors attended the Open House at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds OSU Extension Center offices.
Since the majority of the population of Tulsa country lives in an urban environment, the Tulsa Country Extension Service maintains a demonstration garden, as might be utilized in a homeowners yard. A number of different themes are represented in the Memorial gardens. Vegatables, fruits, perennials, annuals, historical plants, newly introduced plants and a magnificent water garden hosting both Koi and exotic water plants are all included. Over half of the garden is replanted each year, to insure its' currency with the nursery and growers introductions.
Several hundred hours of grooming, planting and labeling happen long before this one day in June. Visitors come away with a new appreciation for what urban gardening can be in their own backyard. As always, this year's Open House will feature the newest ideas in urban and residential landscape design.
