In April of each year, The Tulsa Master Gardeners' conduct an annual bedding plant sale as their major fundraiser. Profits from the sale allow the Master Gardeners' to provide educational programs that impact individuals of all levels in the Tulsa area. Community Education programs funded include The School Enrichment Program, The Senior Living Project, Outdoor Classroom and Community Gardens, landscaping of Habitat for Humanity homes, the educational exhibit at Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show, and maintenance of The Demonstration Garden at the OSU Extension Center.
In the School Enrichment Program the Master Gardeners go into the classroom to interact with elementary school students and their teachers. They present a total of six different guided, hands-on, 45-minute programs with horticultural learning experiences.
The Senior Living Project involves residents of assisted living centers and nursing homes. MGs help develop gardens and hanging baskets for the enjoyment and education of residents. MGs assist in landscaping homes built by Habitat for Humanity. The MGs also present a large educational exhibit at the Home and Garden Show each year in March.
MGs use the Outdoor Classroom and Community Garden program to provide educational assistance for special projects in Tulsa area public schools and public gardens. A Demonstration Garden is maintained at the OSU Extension Center to educate the public about horticulture materials, methods and techniques they can use in their own gardens, and an open house is held annually in June. MGs also serve to educate the public by answering, at the MG office, approximately 50,000 telephone calls each year related to homeowners' questions and problems.
