Clematis

Clematis “Stand by Me”

(Clematis freemontii x Clematis integrifolia)

Sometimes referred to as “Leather Flower”.

“Stand by Me” is special among clematis as a compact, upright, non-vining variety that thrives in gardens and containers alike. From late spring through early summer, it boasts a profusion of unique bell-shaped, rich purple-blue downward facing flowers with some rebloom possible in mid-summer.  The blossoms are followed by ornamental, fluffy, creamy seedheads that remain on the plant until winter when this herbaceous plant dies to the ground. Perennial in zones 3-7, prune any remaining stems in early springs to just above any healthy buds.

At maturity, “Stand by Me” grows 34-38 inches high and 24-36 inches wide. Although this bush clematis is not a climber, it benefits from the support of neighboring shrub or a low cage to maintain its upright stance. This plant grows best in well-drained soils in full sun or part shade.

Toxic to dogs, cats and horses when ingested. Use caution when choosing this plant for a garden or landscape.
