Dwarf Red Powder Puff
Calliandra haematocephala
The Dwarf Red Powere Puff is a flowering shrub with unique red puffy, feather like flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant has small clustered buds that look like hard, dry berries and last thought the warm season from early spring until cool autumn nights. This drought tolerant plant is slow growing but can reach a height of 3-4 feet and a width of 4-8 feet with bushy upright thin canes. The Dwarf Red Powder Puff plant can also be grown in a container and will remain smaller. It grows best in full sun but will do well in light shade and prefers sandy soil. It is sometimes used in parking lot islands as a mass planting and can make a beautiful hedge as a foundation plant. This plant was sourced from an Oklahoma nursery but the Dwarf Red Powder Puff can also be grown from seed.
