Lemon Scented Geranium

Lemon Scented Geranium

Pelargonium crispum

Tall and spiky with a wonderful lemon scent, pelargonium is ideally suited for container growing. This native of southern France varies in height and width and grows quickly. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil with good air circulation but it will tolerate light shade. It can be grown as an annual when planted outdoors or overwintered indoors in colder climates. It is hardy in zone 10 and some varieties in zone 7-8. Pinching back the stems encourages bushier growth. Its tiny leaves are crinkled and deeply lobed. Lemon Scented Geranium's beautifully colored flowers are edible and can be added to salads or candied and used to decorate desserts. The only reason to prune a scented geranium is if it outgrows its space or needs to be shaped. It is propagated by stem cuttings as the best method.
