Toad Lily

Toad Lily

Tricyrtis hirta

The Toad Lily gets its name from the spots on its blossom that look like a toad's dots and dimples. It is an herbaceous perennial that originates from Japan. A cousin to Hollyhocks, the Toad Lily blossoms are exotic orchid like blooms that appear in late summer to early fall. A hardy woodland plant, the Toad Lily does well in moderate shade to full shade and grows best in normal to sandy or clay soil. Toad Lily can grow 23-27 inches high with a 1-2 ft spread and forms an upright bushy mound. It is easy to care for with average moisture and it attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Expect to see Toad Lily come back every year from self-sown seedlings.
